META Tags for Search Engine Optimization:

Once your web site is up and running, it is the responsibility of your web designer to make sure that it is search engine ready. This is achieved by having unique titles and descriptions on every page. It's also important to include the META keywords tag even though only about half of the search engines make use of them. The titles should be meaningful and suitable for the page. Choose the wording of the descriptions very carefully to try and include words and phrases that people might use in a search to find your site. Size does matter. If the description is too long, it will be truncated by the search engine. Try and get the most important part in the first 25 to 30 words.

While these items are of extreme importance, don't neglect the visible text on your page. Carefully word the text to appeal to human visitors as well as include words and phrases that people might use to search for your site. Use them as much as possible without making it overly repetitive for your human visitors or to the point that the search engines would see it as "spamming" them by just repeating the same phrases over and over again. Make use of "alternate text" for any images that are used. As well as describing the picture, they can also include key words. Some search engines use "link popularity" in part for determining your ranking. Google in particular will give you a higher ranking if it finds other sites that have links to yours, so exchanging links with appropriate sites that you do business with will be an asset.

Titles, Descriptions, Keywords and Visible Content

The sites listed above are examples of ones that have proper titles, descriptions and keywords in place, along with content on their site that appeals to human visitors as well, and that have either achieved success through a good search engine ranking, or who are in process of achieving it.

To help make a site search engine ready, these items go in the <HEAD> of the document and preferably should be at the beginning of the <HEAD> section. The title and description for each page should be unique. Try to include key words that might be used by someone performing a search in both the title and the description. Try to have a few unique keywords for each page. The syntax is as follows:
